Kerouac Writer in Residence Application Guidelines
Applications for the 2011-2012 residencies are due by Friday, April 1, 2011 and results will be announced in May. You can apply anytime throughout the year but applications will not be read until after the April 1st deadline. Also multiple submissions are not allowed.
About the Residencies:
The Kerouac Project provides four residencies a year to writers of any stripe or age, living anywhere in the world. Each residency consists of approximately a three month stay in the cottage where Jack Kerouac wrote his novel Dharma Bums. Utilities and a food stipend of $800 are included. All you are required to do is work on your writing project and give a reading in the house at the end of your residency. The Project also offers opportunities to you for readings, leading workshops and interacting with the Central Florida Community in various ways. From time to time during your stay you will be asked to participate when the house is used for events such as readings and workshops for local students or book groups. We strive to be a central part of the literary community by bringing writers to Central Florida. The Kerouac House is much loved by all that have come to write here.

The Application Process:
Thank you for your interest in applying to the Jack Kerouac Writer in Residence Project. The selection committee has made some recent changes intended to streamline the application process.
The first change is that we will now be receiving applications electronically. The intention is to cut down on paper usage, get a little greener and ease distribution logistics to the selection committee.
The second change is that there will now be a $20 application fee. This fee is applied directly to the program services we offer, primarily the room and board of four, writer residencies, each year. The Kerouac Project is a non-profit organization and relies on fund raising and donations for survival. We are 100% volunteer run. That includes the selection committee that will be taking the time to read, discuss and choose the writers for the upcoming year.
Here are the guidelines- Please follow them to the letter:
Send one file (not multiple attachments!) either as a pdf or .doc Microsoft word file (not .docx!) to kp.selection.committee@gmail.com. The file should contain the following in this order:
- Letter of intent: This is a brief one page, or less, letter describing what you would like to work on in the house and is a general introduction of you to us.
- A one page resume: This may include your educational back ground, a list of previously published poems, short stories, novels or other works. Generally gives us an idea of what you have been up to. We support up and coming writers so no need to feel intimidated by the resume. It is simply a way for us to get to know a little more about you.
- A ten page writing sample: This is the heart of your submission and we can’t wait to read what you have been working on!
In the body of your email please include your name and contact information, your preference for residency time, (This can be a couple slots, all but one, or no preference. In other words you do not have to apply for only one slot.) and please indicate if you have sent a check or paid the submission fee with paypal.
Payment: This can be one of two ways. For snail mail send checks to Kerouac Project, Po Box 547477, Orlando, FL 32854.
To pay by paypal please click below.
Please follow the above guidelines very closely. Submissions over ten pages will not be read.
Thanks for your time and good luck.
